Real People, Real Answers

What do the BYU employees who’ve taken MSB 205R, Planning for Financial Security in Retirement, think about the course?

February 2025:
"The class so far has been fantastic!  You have presented so much helpful information. I am so glad I am taking this class! Thank you so much for putting together all this information and presenting it in this class. I must say it is the best investment I have made towards a secure retirement." - Melinda Bridenstine

Please share any other proactive steps you were prompted to take after attending this class.

“I will be setting up an individual meeting with DMBA regarding my retirement so that I can make sure that I am set where I need to be.”
—Karen Beesley

“You need to prepare emotionally, as well as financially, to retire. The easiest part is to park money away from your monthly checks. It is more difficult to manage your money correctly, once retired.”
—Howard Loos

What did you most like about your instructor's teaching?

“He helped us to understand what we needed to do to prepare for retirement.”
—Drew Thompson

“I liked his teaching style - also that he was so positive about the future. He had great slides and was patient with questions from the class.”
—Kellie Barnhurst

"I had never had a finance class, and this took the mystery and fear out of things. I appreciated the time given to answer questions during each class.”
—Elizabeth Funk

What was the most valuable part of the class for you?

“All of it was excellent. I thought every class was worthwhile. It was helpful to learn how the stock market works and the importance of diversifying. It was also helpful to learn how to continue managing my finances after I retire. It was helpful to understand the need for a plan regarding how to withdraw my money over my retirement years.”
—LaNae Valentine

“The most valuable part was understanding how investments work and how to take advantage of long term investment. In general though, I feel the entire class was valuable (for example understanding Social Security and mail box money).”
—Patricia Wilson

“I found him exceptionally knowledgeable, experienced, and well informed. He had answers for everyone's questions which he was able to explain in simple terms. He was personable and down-to-earth without being a clown or entertainer like a previous instructor of the course.”
—Merrill Christensen

Would you recommend this course to a colleague? Why or why not?

“Yes, I would recommend this course to all of my colleagues because even if they believe that they know everything, they will learn something out of this course to benefit them in the future.”
—Karen Beesley

“Yes. I think most are unaware of many concepts being taught in the class.”
—Daniel Wilson
